Mount Carmel High School was established in 1990 by Father John McHugh, SOLT to provide an affordable quality Catholic education in order to serve the young men and women of Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize. It started with only volunteer teachers and a one-room building. Now it has multiple buildings on its campus, has a full-time staff of Belizean teachers, and serves over 400 students. There are still 10-15 volunteers each year who offer a year of their life to serve the young men and women of Belize.
A college degree is required for applying teachers.
Teachers usually teach about 5 sessions per day with about 20-35 students per class. There is a stipend for volunteers. Housing and food are provided. The volunteer year begins around August 15th and ends around June 5th. There is a Christmas break from around December 15th to around January 5th. Transportation to and from Belize is typically fundraised by the volunteers in order to cover their travel expense.
