Mark Wendling was born 28 April 1973 to Paul and Sharon Wendling, the second of five children, in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Mark attended Catholic Primary and Secondary schools, graduating valedictorian from both. He then attended St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto where he graduated magna cum laude in May 1995 with a specialists degree in Biochemistry and Chemistry.
Mark then volunteered at Mount Carmel High School in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize, Central America, under the direction of Rev. John McHugh of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity, pastor of the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In his two years as a volunteer (September 1995 – June 1997), Mark’s faith deepened significantly. During his second year as a volunteer Mark discerned a call to the priesthood and to the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity with the help of his Spiritual Director Rev. Anthony Blount and Vocations Director Rev. Anthony Anderson.
In August 1997 Mark was accepted as a Novice into the S.O.L.T. Novitiate in Belen, NM under the direction of Novice Servant Rev. Santan Pinto. In June 1998 Mark made his First Profession of the promises of poverty, chastity and obedience.
Br. Mark then studied Philosophy at Our Lady of Corpus Christi during its foundational year September 1998 through June 1999. Having completed the prerequisites to enter the Theology program at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas – the “Angelicum” – Br. Mark began his theological studies there in October 1999. Br. Mark completed his undergraduate degree in Theology in June 2002 attaining the distinction magna cum laude, having studied his second of three years in the Italian section. He then enrolled in the Licentiate program in Dogma with a view to focusing on Christology. Br. Mark completed one year of the two-year program by June 2003.
On 8 Dec. 2002 Br. Mark was ordained to the Diaconate at the Christian Brothers’ motherhouse in Rome. On 11 May 2003, Dcn. Mark was ordained to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ by Pope John Paul II at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Rev. Mark Wendling was informed of his first assignment as Vicar at the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize under the pastor Rev. Anthony Blount, and he reported there on 3 September 2003. Not long thereafter, Rev. Blount was reassigned and Rev. Daniel Estes assumed the position of Pastor in November 2003. On 5 May 2008 Rev. Estes departed for a new assignment and Rev. Mark Wendling was assigned as Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Benque Viejo del Carmen. He is in that position until the present day.
During his first four and a half years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Rev. Wendling was the Spiritual Director and Confessor for the candidates to the brotherhood and priesthood with the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity who were sent to the parish for periods of one year at a time. Approximately 22 men went through formation in those years. Subsequently Rev. Wendling has been the formator for the men sent to candidacy at the parish in Belize.
In May of 2013 Fr. Mark departed from Belize for a new assignment as Rector of the SOLT House of Studies in Detroit, MI and Vocation Director for SOLT. He recently was elected 2nd Assistant in the American Region of SOLT
